Hubert Joly, born and raised in France, is president, CEO and a director of Carlson, a global hospitality and travel company based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.

Early career

Joly graduated from the HEC Paris with a degree in business administration, and from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris with a degree in public administration. Joly was a consultant, specializing in the high-tech sector, and then a partner with McKinsey & Company from 1982 to 1996, working in the firm’s San Francisco, New York and Paris offices. He left McKinsey in 1996 to become vice-president of Electronic Data Systems (EDS) Europe and president of EDS France (EDS is now part of HP). At the 1997 World Economic Forum in Davos, he was elected a Global Leader for Tomorrow.

He worked for EDS until 1999 when he became CEO of Vivendi Universal Games, headquartered in Los Angeles, and then part of the leadership team of its parent company, Vivendi Universal,where he served as executive vice president with responsibility for overseeing the company's American assets.

Joly left Vivendi in 2004 to become president and chief executive officer of Carlson Wagonlit Travel (CWT). Under his leadership, CWT grew its annual sales from USD 8.9 billion in 2003 to USD 25.5 billion in 2007.[1] Joly’s appointment as president and chief executive officer of Carlson was made in January 2008, as a replacement for Marilyn Carlson Nelson, and he took the positions in March 2008.[2][3]

Additional roles

In addition to his current position, he is chair of the CWT board of directors, vice chair of the Rezidor Hotel Group board of directors and serves on the board of directors for both Carlson and Ralph Lauren. He is a member of the Travel and Tourism Advisory Board, established in 2003 to advise the United States Department of Commerce. He also is a member of the executive committee of the World Travel and Tourism Council, serves on the board of trustees of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and is a member of the executive committee of the Minnesota Business Partnership. He was honored as one of the 25 Most Influential Executives of the Business Travel Industry (2006 and 2009) by Business Travel News magazine.[4]
